Series Review // Umbrella Academy Season 2 : Hargreaves Put ‘Fun’ in Dysfunctional

Amidst this coronavirus pandemic, getting new seasons of our favorite shows has been a blessing in disguise, okay maybe blessing is a strong word considering the prevailing circumstances, but personally, binge-watching and reading have been quite helpful in averting my mind from this global suffering that we are facing and also has made quarantine suck slightly less.

Netflix dropped Season 2 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ recently, after a long wait, which felt like an eternity, to be honest. And after finishing the whole season in one sitting (I promised myself I’ll watch only one tho), I couldn’t wait to talk about it. So here I am writing down my thoughts on the new season of the show…

Spoilers Ahead!!!!

If you liked the first season, this season is set to blow your mind, with the same amazing music and new crazy adventure. Season 2 starts as a continuation of ending season 1, with the help of Five’s time travel jump. The season begins with Hargreaves siblings arriving at Dallas in late November 1963, just a few days before the President Kennedy is killed. Five seem to appear last but just in time, to witness the nuclear holocaust. Luckily he gets a chance to go 10 days back, find his dysfunctional family, and stop the doomsday from happening not only in 1963 but also in 2019. Unfortunately, during the time jump, they accidentally got scattered across the timeline between the years 1960 to 1963, which means they could be anywhere by now.

This season lets us connect with the siblings on different levels, as they try to adjust themselves with their new lives, separated from each other. Character Development that season 1 clearly lacked, is seen in season 2. .Allison facing the ugly truth about being black in 1963, that’s still relevant in 2020. Deigo kind of got spotlight in this season, it makes us question why he wants to be the hero in every situation. Klaus on the other hand stills has the least sensible life, he is united with his lost love(Dave from season 1), he can be seen trying to save the love of his life, but sadly, we cannot change always change things. Luther seems to be at peace with the current situations as he joins Jack Ruby’s, which I am guessing is a fight club. I loved that Ben got more to himself in this season rather than just being like Klaus says, “ghost bitch” of Klaus. After landing in Dallas, Vanya was struck by a car and is suffering from amnesia as the season opens. She doesn’t remember anything about herself or what she did back in 2019. Well, This allowed her to start fresh.

We also get to see many new supporting characters, that play a significant role in the individual stories of the siblings and seem to affect the storyline overall. From Lila to Sissy and Harlan, the supporting characters and the actor playing them keep us hooked to the show.

Other than this, Handler also makes a comeback in this season, and this time she seems pretty vicious as she tries to take over the commission. It is later revealed that she’s the ‘evil’ fairy godmother of Lila, Diego’s ex-girlfriend.
Talking about the villains, unlike Cha-Cha and Hazel(season 1), the trio of Swedes brother was not as engaging and fun. This could be due to the season focusing more on the lives of Hargreaves.

As the season is set in 1963 and Reginald Hargreaves is alive and healthy, we get to see more of him(unlike the glimpse of him as flashbacks in season 1) and young Pogo.

Season 2, is bigger and better than season 1, it gave the group a chance to start over, make amends, and patch things up. Some even managed to find love and some got heart broken all over again, well that’s what life is about. Over all I loved this season and would definitely recommend to give it a watch.
